Production of the Chevy Malibu, the brand’s final sedan, to cease

General Motors has announced that the production of the Chevrolet Malibu, its last remaining sedan, will end this year. The Fairfax Assembly Plant in Kansas City, Kansas, where it is built, will be repurposed to produce the new generation of the Chevrolet Bolt EV. This means that Chevrolet’s lineup in the US will now consist only of trucks, SUVs, and the Corvette sports car.

Ford has already followed suit and discontinued its Taurus and Fusion sedans, leaving only the Mustang in their line-up. In addition to the Mustang, Chevrolet also discontinued its competitor, the Camaro, last year. With traditional cars representing less than 20% of US auto sales according to Cox Automotive, it seems that both companies are aligning with industry trends by phasing out sedan models.

Despite being one of the oldest sedans on the market compared to competitors like the Honda Accord and Toyota Camry, the Malibu sold over 130,000 units last year. Its popularity among consumers indicates that there may still be a demand for traditional cars in certain segments of the market. However, as more consumers turn towards SUVs and trucks due to changing driving habits and lifestyles, it is likely that we will see fewer traditional car models being produced in future years.
