A new and exciting course is set to be introduced at Dexter High School that aligns with the school’s strategic plan of preparing students for the 21st century by integrating technology into education. This course, called Music Technology, aims to foster creativity, critical thinking, and technological proficiency among students, ensuring they acquire skills that are relevant to modern industries.

The idea for the Music Technology course was proposed by Grace Wolfe, the Director of Bands at DHS, and it was approved at the April 29 meeting. Wolfe explained that the course will provide students with skills necessary for modern music production and technology-driven music industries. It will allow students to explore creativity through digital tools and gain a deeper understanding of music beyond traditional methods, preparing them for diverse career opportunities in the field.

The semester-long class will be open to students with varying musical backgrounds, experience levels, and interests. Students will have the opportunity to learn about various software, technologies, and musical devices, as well as live sampling to unleash their creativity in a hands-on environment. The course will emphasize core concepts such as digital audio production, sound design, music software proficiency, electronic composition, MIDI sequencing, and an understanding of emerging technologies in the music industry.

Dexter Community Schools Board of Education President Mara Greaterox expressed excitement about the new course, emphasizing that it will be a valuable opportunity for music program students and those who want to be involved in the program but may not want to play an instrument.
