In a major blow to the healthcare industry, Steward Health Care, which operates nine hospitals in Massachusetts, announced on Monday that it is filing for bankruptcy. The company has been grappling with millions of dollars in debt and has decided to proceed with a Chapter 11 restructuring process through the U.S. Bankruptcy Code by submitting petitions in the Southern District of Texas.
Despite this setback, Steward stated that it is finalizing the details of debtor-in-possession financing from Medical Properties Trust, with an initial funding of $75 million and up to an additional $225 million upon certain conditions being met. This will provide much-needed financial support to the struggling company as it navigates through the bankruptcy process.
Dr. Ralph de la Torre, CEO of Steward Health Care, explained that filing for Chapter 11 restructuring was the best decision for the company, its patients, physicians, employees, and the communities they serve. He emphasized that this process would not disrupt day-to-day operations and would allow Steward to continue providing necessary care to their patients without any interruptions.
