World War II veteran and Phillies fan, Paul Trumbetas, celebrated his 100th birthday at the Southeastern Veterans’ Center in Spring City. His daughter, Denise Selzer, reached out to the Phillies to ask for a small favor in honor of her father’s birthday. Instead of just allowing them to attend a game, the Phillies surprised Trumbetas with a grand celebration at the center, complete with military vehicles, the Phillie Phanatic, and a salute to his service.
Trumbetas, who has been a lifelong fan of Philadelphia sports teams, was surrounded by friends and family as he enjoyed the festivities. The event was part of the Phillies Salute to Service, which honored Trumbetas and his fellow military veterans. He was equally surprised and touched by the outpouring of support and celebration from his favorite team.
The party continued as Phillies legend Mickey Morandini presented Trumbetas with the ball he would throw out for the first pitch at an upcoming game. True to his sports-loving spirit, Trumbetas offered some advice to the team: “Tell them to keep hitting that’s all.” The day was truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience for Trumbetas and his family who were overwhelmed by the generosity and recognition from his favorite team.
