The South Korean government has denied responsibility for the problems that led to the evacuation of tens of thousands of attendees at last year’s World Scout Jamboree, despite being heavily criticized by investigators. The event, which was held in August, was plagued with issues from the start, including extreme heat and inadequate food supplies.

The independent panel’s report outlined significant challenges and deficiencies in safety, security, medical support, food, sanitation, and hygiene. It also criticized the government for taking on a de facto role as the organizer of the event, causing structural and coordination complications. Despite these findings, the government has refused to take responsibility for the problems that occurred during the Jamboree.

The UK contingent withdrew over 4,500 child scouts due to the issues with the event. This withdrawal prompted many other countries to follow suit, leaving thousands of young people without proper medical facilities or adequate supplies like saline solution. The UK contingent had initially planned to stay until the end of the Jamboree but ultimately decided to withdraw due to concerns about safety and logistics.

Despite criticism from investigators and other countries, the South Korean government has maintained that it only played a supportive role in organizing the event. However, this assertion has been met with skepticism by many who believe that it took on too much responsibility for organizing and coordinating the event.
